Google on Scribus and learn about an up and coming WYSIWYG program for brochures, newsletters and highly formatted books (e.g. coffee table books, preschooler books.) This Open Source program runs on all three platforms and yields professional results within its range of suitable projects. I especially like it for cover design in conjunction with Gimp for special effects. It outputs pdf (of course) and meets the latest pdf standards, such as x/3. It has layers, transparencies and will through a special kind of frame allow for TeX math formulas and the like. The H & J isn't yet up to InDesign/Tex standards but neither is Quark's.
