Hi, Has anyone had any success with starting out as a home-based typesetter. If so, how did you start out and who did you approach?

I started a home-based business 7 years ago. I do typesetting for Translation Houses. This means that I layout foreign languages in the same application as the English if possible. I started by sending my resume to Translation Houses that used Freelancers. I work on both Mac and PC.

I've been a freelancer for over 20 years. I do all kinds of graphic production, from layout to forms to digital product photography. I've found that in order to survive, you've gotta be flexible. I work from my home, but also work at various client's offices since most of my clients are either ad agencies, designers or in-house art departments.

As for finding work, once your skill set is good, you'll need to make the rounds and meet people. Email used to be viable for getting new clients, but with the current amount of spam, it's not effective as an introduction. Make a list, call them and go visit. Offer to buy them coffee (or lunch) and ask if you can pick their brains. Don't "sell" them. Just ask what they need and advice on how you could get started.

I own the domain name http://www.typesettingservice.com

It is not currently rented but when it is active it usually ranks in the top 3 positions for phrases that generate leads from the major search engines such as google and yahoo.

Let me know if you are interested in a trial 2 month period. My company does search engine optimization which we can also help you with.

And if you are interested in advertising on typesetterforum.com that can also be arranged.

Good luck with your endeavour! - John

I have 20+ years typesetting experience in the workforce. I have worked as a typesetter for two local companies some years ago. I am looking to get back into typesetting on a part-time basis. I am an extremely fast, accurate typist and also have a daughter who is interested in getting into typesetting at home as well. I'm looking for some help setting up and where to get some projects to get started. I would appreciate any help you can offer.

    Good Day ALL,
I am new here. Just found this forum by searching the "OLD" word typesetting. I really didn't think any of us were left. But I am glad that I did find this forum. I've been a typesetter for 40 years that gone desktop back in 1989. I know all major Adobe PRINT software. I would like to offer my knowledge, experience and wisdom base to anyone who needs it. I was in business in my 30s in the 1980 operating our family ad agency. I did every possible print piece imaginable BEFORE and after the introduction of desktop into the mainstream. I've been on-line since the days of GENIE and COMPUSERVE were fierce competitors and when version AOL for MAC was first released. So I've been around and have 100s of tails and horror stories to draw from. I work at a printing company, the oldest and richest in Fort Myers, FL as a Senior Graphics File Troubleshooter. Because the economy is so bad my job at the printing company is 32 hours and benefits have all been stripped. But at least they've kept me on. I also do part-time work on-line on MAC or PC (of course). I even use OpenSource.org apps. just for a change.

Oh! I can be reached at gaf@fraller.org. I'm JUST in my fourth week from a retropublic radical prostatectomy. The cath has been out for one week Monday the 24th of May, 2010. Having no benefits other than some AFLAC has set me into debt, so my cause is to get me out of medical debt by setting up my DOT org that carries my last name.

    Hi All,

I have 20 years experience in typesetting/graphic design and am starting up freelance but I need to do some research and get some pricing together for my business plan.

Can anyone give me an idea of what they charge for straight text, integrated complex setting, full colour, 5 colour and spot colour on a per page basis? Also scanning and image creation prices?

I'd be grateful of the experience of people who have taken this step already. Rough prices will do. Also does anyone do eBooks and what do they charge?

    Many thanks and regards

    To whom it may concern,

I am a stay at home mum looking to get back into graphics and any sort of typesetting at home. I have done a 4 year Tafe course and worked in numerous graphic industries and I am fully qualified. I can type 90-100 words per min and am very accurate. I would really appreciate if anyone has any sort of work for me to do. I am also in the process of learning CS4.
